A patient and long-time friend recently got word that he is cancer-free. Along with his family, we were overjoyed to hear the news!
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men, behind skin cancer. Prostate cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American men, the most-common in nonsmoking men.
Along with the increasing age of the population, we expect to see a rise in prostate cancer cases and deaths. It is typically diagnosed between the ages of 45-70. The cause of prostate cancer is primarily hormone imbalances, specifically high Testosterone and Insulin-Like Growth-Factor 1 (IGF-1). Both of these hormones are elevated in men that consume animal products.
Studies show that men who consume just 2.5 eggs or more per week are at a 81% higher risk of fatal prostate cancer. Increased risk is also seen in those with consistent red and processed meat consumption. Milk is especially high in IGF-1, since it is intended to help a calf grow into a cow quickly. Men with high IGF-1 have over four times the risk of prostate cancer than those with low levels. Daily intake of 2 glasses of milk is associated with a 60% increased risk for prostate cancer.
Some cases are symptomatic, meaning there is a noticeable symptom such as trouble urinating or blood in the urine. However, more than 80% are asymptomatic, detectable only by laboratory screening or examination.
Prostate cancer seems to be highly-correlated with family genetic factors, meaning men with a close relative with prostate cancer have double the risk. Lifestyle factors also play a role in the mediation of all disease processes, and they have the power to ignite or extinguish genetic predispositions for disease.
Lifestyle Medicine goes beyond 'eat right and exercise' by taking time to examine family history, personal history, and current conditions to formulate a comprehensive plan with the power to prevent, treat, and often reverse diseases, even cancer.
